2. Transport — An Introduction

Natural resources, economic activities and markets are rarely found in one place. Transport, communication and trade establish links between producing and consuming centres. Transport is a service/facility for carriage of persons and goods using humans, animals and vehicles, over land, water and air; pipelines carry materials like petroleum, natural gas and ores in liquefied form.

Several places (nodes) joined together by a series of routes (links) to form a pattern.
  • International movement of goods is handled by ocean freighters. Road transport is cheaper/faster over short distances and door-to-door service. Railways suit large volumes of bulky material over long distances. Airways best move high-value, light, perishable goods.
  • In a well-managed system, these modes complement each other.

3. Land Transport

Most movement of goods/services occurs over land. Historically, humans and animals were carriers (palanquins, mules, camels); the wheel brought carts/wagons; the steam engine (18th century) revolutionised transport. The first public railway line opened in 1825 between Stockton and Darlington, England.

Horses — draught animals in Western countries. Dogs and reindeer — draw sledges in North America, North Europe, Siberia. Mules — preferred in mountains. Camels — caravans in deserts. In India, bullocks pull carts.

🛤️ Roads

  • Most economical for short distances; offers door-to-door service. Unmetalled roads are unserviceable in rainy seasons; even metalled roads are handicapped by heavy rain/floods.
  • World’s total motorable road length: ~15 million km, of which North America accounts for 33% — highest road density and vehicle numbers.
  • Highways: Metalled roads (about 80m wide) connecting distant places with separate lanes, bridges, flyovers. India’s Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata.
  • Border Roads: Roads along international boundaries, integrating remote areas and aiding defence.
  • Key highways: Trans-Canadian Highway (Vancouver–St. John’s), Alaskan Highway, Pan-American Highway (South/Central America–USA/Canada), Trans-Continental Stuart Highway (Darwin–Melbourne, Australia).

🚆 Railways

  • For bulky goods and passengers over long distances. Gauges: broad (>1.5m), standard (1.44m, used in UK), metre gauge (1m), smaller gauges. World has about 13 lakh km of railways.
  • Europe: ~4,40,000 km, most dense in the world; Belgium has highest density (1km per 6.5 sq km); important railheads — London, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Berlin, Warsaw.
  • Russia: Railways carry ~90% of transport; Moscow is the most important railhead.
  • North America: ~40% of world’s rail total; used more for long-distance bulky freight (ores, grains, timber) than passengers.
  • Africa: Only 40,000 km; South Africa alone has 18,000 km (gold/diamond/copper mining areas).

4. Trans-Continental Railways

These run across a continent linking its two ends, constructed for economic and political reasons.

🇷🇺 Trans-Siberian Railway

Russia’s major route: St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, via Moscow, Ufa, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Chita, Khabarovsk. Longest (9,332 km), double-tracked and electrified. Opens up Asian region to West European markets.

🇨🇦 Trans-Canadian Railway

7,050 km, Halifax (east) to Vancouver (Pacific coast), via Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary. Constructed 1886; connects Quebec-Montreal Industrial Region with Prairie wheat belt; economic artery of Canada.

🇺🇸 Union and Pacific Railway

Connects New York (Atlantic) to San Francisco (Pacific) via Cleveland, Chicago, Omaha, Ogden, Sacramento. Exports: ores, grain, paper, chemicals, machinery.

🇦🇺 Australian Trans-Continental Railway

West-east: Perth to Sydney, via Kalgoorlie, Broken Hill, Port Augusta. Another north-south line connects Adelaide and Alice Springs.

🚉 The Orient Express

Paris to Istanbul via Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade — 96 hours (vs 10 days by sea). Exports: cheese, bacon, oats, wine, fruits, machinery.

🌏 Proposed Trans-Asiatic Railway

Would link Istanbul with Bangkok via Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar.

5. Water Transport

Water transport doesn’t require route construction — the friction of water is far less than land, making it cheaper for bulky material over long distances. Divided into sea routes and inland waterways.

🇪🇬 Suez Canal

Constructed 1869 in Egypt, Port Said (north) to Port Suez (south), linking Mediterranean and Red Sea. Sea-level canal, ~160 km, 11-15m deep, no locks. Reduces Liverpool–Colombo distance vs. Cape of Good Hope route.

🇵🇦 Panama Canal

Connects Atlantic (east) to Pacific (west) across the Panama Isthmus; ~72 km long, six-lock system (ships rise/fall 26m). Shortens New York–San Francisco by 13,000 km. Vital to Latin American economies.

Development depends on navigability (width/depth), continuity of water flow, and transport technology.

6. Air Transport and Pipelines

✈️ Air Transport

  • Fastest but costliest mode; preferred for long-distance travel and valuable/rapid cargo; often the only means to reach inaccessible areas (mountains, deserts, polar regions).
  • U.K. pioneered commercial jet transport; U.S.A. developed post-War international civil aviation. Over 250 commercial airlines offer regular services today.
  • Inter-Continental Air Routes: Dense east-west belt in the Northern Hemisphere — Eastern USA, Western Europe, Southeast Asia. USA alone has 60% of world’s airways. Africa, Asiatic Russia, South America lack air services.

🛢️ Pipelines

  • Used extensively for liquids/gases — water, petroleum, natural gas, liquified coal, even milk (New Zealand).
  • Big Inch — famous USA pipeline carrying petroleum from Gulf of Mexico oil wells to North-eastern states; ~17% of all freight (tonne-km) in USA moves via pipelines.
  • Proposed Iran-India via Pakistan oil/gas pipeline would be the longest in the world.

7. Communications

Human beings have used various methods for long-distance communication — telegraph and telephone were historically important; the telegraph aided colonisation of the American West.
  • Optic Fibre Cables (OFC): The first major breakthrough — allows large quantities of data to be transmitted rapidly, securely and virtually error-free.
  • With digitisation in the 1990s, telecommunication merged with computers to form the Internet.
  • Satellite Communication: Emerged since the 1970s after USA/USSR pioneered space research; makes unit cost/time of communication invariant with distance. India’s satellite milestones: Aryabhatt (1975), Bhaskar-I (1979), Rohini (1980), APPLE (1981).
  • Cyberspace/Internet: The electronic digital world for communicating without physical movement — largest electronic network, connecting over a billion people in 100+ countries. Users grew from <50 million (1995) to ~5.4 billion (2023); USA’s share dropped from 66% (1995) to 25% (2005), with growth shifting to developing countries.

Internet, together with fax, television and radio, has expanded contemporary economic/social space through e-mail, e-commerce, e-learning, e-governance — modern communication systems, more than transportation, have made the concept of a global village a reality.
